RECENT NEWSCS DEPARTMENT BRACKET CHALLENGE WINNER: Congratulations to John Herr, winner of the 2008 Bracket Challenge. John's entry beat out 132 other contestants and earned him bragging rights as the most knowledgable hoopster on campus. Check out the final standings to see where your entry finished. CU HOSTS ROBOTICS CONTEST: On November 9, the Department of Computer Science cohosted the Omaha Power Puzzle Challenge, a robotics contest involving teams from area Boys and Girls Clubs. Students from CSC 448 (Freedom and Security in a Digital-Divided Society) served as coaches for the teams of 9-14 year olds as they programmed LEGO robots to move and solve problems. The competition was held in Rigge 120 from 5:30 to 8:00, and was sponsored by the AIM Institute. CS CAREERS AND INTERNSHIPS: The Creighton Career Center maintains a database of internships and jobs, categorized by type. If you are nearing graduation or are interested in internship possibilities, register for CareerTrak access and/or stop by the Career Center in the lower level of Brandeis. DEGREE PROGRAMS: To meet the diverse needs of Creighton's student body, the Department of Computer Science offers several degree programs. There are two majors: the 36-credit B.S.C.S degree is intended for students planning to pursue a career in computing; the 27-credit B.S. degree is intended for students who wish to combine computer science with broader studies in other disciplines. We also offer two minors: the Minor in Computer Science provides a broad perspective of computing (and consists of 6 computer science courses); the Minor in Interactive Web Development empowers students to create and assess interactive Web media (and consists of 3 computer science courses and 3 graphic design courses from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication). FREE SOFTWARE: The Department of Computer Science at Creighton has partnered with Microsoft as part of its MSDN Academic Alliance program. If you are currently registered in a computer science course, you are eligible to receive a free copy of several Microsoft packages, including Visual Studio .NET, Windows XP/Vista, and Visio Professional (but NOT Microsoft Office). Instructions for downloading this and other free software used in CS courses can be found by selecting "software" in the "Info" menu at the top of this page, or by clicking here. FILE SERVER SPACE FOR CS STUDENTS: The department is providing free file server space to all CS majors and students enrolled in a computer science course. Each student is allotted 4GB of space on the albatross file server for storing course related files and software. The simplest way to access this space from on campus is to open a folder and type \\albatross\cscstudent\abc12345 in the Address box, where abc12345 is your netID. |
